Inspired by Rembrandt van Rijn's painting Slaughtered Ox, 1655, Chaïm Soutine began his series of carcass paintings during the 1910s.  Over the subsequent years, many artists have been inspired by Soutine's series, exploring their own ideas around the shared experience and consumption of animals.

I have been using modern "meat trays" as paint pallets nearly my entire career.  It was time to give consideration the carcasses that spent their final funeral march on these trays.  Sign up for my newsletter, below, to receive updates on the unveiling of the final pieces that reflect my own take on Soutine's carcass... from the view of my experience as a traditional home maker.

IN THE STUDIO

Nichol's studio can be found in the rural countryside near Blacksburg Virginia, not far from Virginia Tech University.  With eleven acres of mountain land and a warm homestead that boasts a complete wood working shop, the studio team finds ample space and inspiration for much of Nichol's work.  We invite you to explore a bit of the magic visitors experience everyday.
